Stone Soup Day

About Stone Soup Day...

Stone Soup Day is an NDP tradition where we come together as a school to share a simple, common meal of bread and soup as a community.  It comes from the concept in the children’s book Stone Soup where a village that was protective of their limited resources found that by putting what they had together, everyone could be fed.  The meal and all that goes into it is a symbol of our solidarity with people around the globe who have little means for survival.  It also is a symbol of how if we more equitably distribute our resources, everyone can be fed.  We also mark this day with a speaker from an outside organization who educates us about the needs of people living in material poverty and other social justice issues.

Students bring in the various ingredients that make up the soup: chopped celery, carrots, onions, crushed tomatoes, vegetable broth, potatoes, frozen peas, string beans and corn.  All these items are collected on Monday.  Our chef, Jeff Goethals (retired faculty member) cooks the soup on Tuesday and we serve it on Wednesday in lunch mods along with a slice of bread for $4.  Additional slices of bread are 25 cents and the girls will usually buy extra bread for their lunch table for $2 a loaf.  Water will also be available.
