Description of Service Site
Started in 2005, the Sisters Academy Summer Camp, is a day camp offering sports and fitness opportunities for the students of Sisters Academy of Baltimore (www.sistersacademy.org), a Catholic, community-centered middle school, that educates girls from families of limited economic means, in southwest Baltimore. Notre Dame Prep students volunteer as counselors at the camp, offering support, encouragement, and friendship with these middle schoolers and maintain their relationship with the students throughout the following school year. Currently, in its third year of existence, Sisters Academy only has a 5th, 6th, and 7th grade (the 7th grade will be their first graduating class a year from now). Last year the camp offered a week of swimming, basketball, volleyball, dance, yoga, and tennis lessons to the students. This year we’re hopeful to add some other activities like drama, art, and computers.
Volunteer Opportunities & Responsibilities
Notre Dame Prep students volunteer as counselors at the camp, offering support, encouragement, and friendship. We hope to have one-to-one or one-to-two relationship of counselors to campers. There is no requirement for counselors’ athletic ability.
We are hoping to sponsor a Field Day for the Sisters Academy girls at NDP on Thursday, June 7th from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. We will need counselors to help with the activities that day. It will be a great opportunity to meet your camper! A planning meeting for Field Day will be announced.
Throughout the school year, we try to keep contact with the campers so each counselors is usually asked to make a Christmas stocking, Valentines card, etc. We have the girls of Sisters Academy join us to watch the Mini Gym meet as well, cheering on their counselor from the summer, and gathering for a small reunion afterward.

2006 Counselor Applications will be available starting Tues, March 13, 2007 outside Mr. Gruswitz’s office. They must be turned in by Tuesday, March 29. 2007 Counselors will be announced in early April.
